2011 Aquatic Species At Risk

The interactive map below provides access to information that depicts Aquatic Species at Risk (SAR) within Conservation Authority watersheds as provided by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). Conservation Authority Species At Risk Distribution Maps are available for download using the interactive map or by clicking on the Conservation Authority links below.

These maps assist agencies in determining whether development proposals should be referred to DFO as a result of presence or absence of Species at Risk and impacts of development proposal activities on the species and their habitats.

A Species at Risk package has been developed for each Conservation Authority watershed and includes:

  • CA-specific Fish and Mussel Maps (pdf format) these maps include Critical Habitat extents and a list of Aquatic Species at Risk found within the Conservation Authority boundaries. Some Conservation Authorities have multiple maps depending on data and watershed size. Instructions around SAR permitting and contact information are contained in the Distribution Map Reference Guide.
  • NEW in 2010: GIS layer (shp) of colour-coded stream segments
  • UPDATED for 2011: Reference Guide for Fish and Mussels (.24Mb)

The Conservation Authority Species At Risk Distribution Maps can be accessed through the interactive map or the list of Conservation Authorities below.

Information from this fish distribution data comes from a national freshwater fish distribution database developed within DFO. The mussel distribution data is a compilation of data from various sources (disclaimer below).

Protocols for relocating SAR mussels and sampling SAR fish.
